Strike at Cargill Netherlands continues – with donkeys

Striking employees at the protein factory of Cargill in Amsterdam expressed their dissatisfaction on the fact that the management does not want to talk about their requirements. They were given support from an unexpected angle: a complete family of donkeys showed up at the front gate of the Dutch headquarters of the American food giant. The reason is that the strikers found that Cargill is drawn in far too stubborn on the conflict around the closure of the plant. „There have already stopped working for six days,” said Erik de Vries, director workers union FNV. „Normally you get a phone call to come and talk, but we have heard nothing from the board.” The core of the conflict that is redundant workers have to go through a new application process. The workers council and FNV find that there are plenty of jobs within the group to avoid redundancies. Employees therefore demand a guaranteed job and also find the quality of the social plan inadequate. Remarkably, colleagues from other offices have announced to support their colleagues. Therefore, they will extend their lunch break by 1.5 hours. They fear that the social plan in the future also will apply for them. The Amsterdam plant employs about 30 people. Cargill in The Netherlands has about 2,000 employees.
