Magyar Cukor inaugurates HUF 3bn silo at sugar refinery

Magyar Cukor, owned by Austria’s Agrana, inaugurated a HUF 3bn silo at its sugar refinery in Kaposvar (SW Hungary). In a speech at the ceremony, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said Hungary’s farm sector was an engine of economic growth and paid tribute to the high quality output of the local food industry. He said Hungary’s economy could grow faster than any other in the region this year, if the work completed in Q3 is continued in Q4. Hungary’s economy grew by 1.7pc in Q3 from the same period a year earlier, preliminary data published last week by the Central Statistics Office (KSH) shows. The Kaposvar sugar refinery is the last one operating in Hungary. All of the other refineries were shut down after the 2007 season, when the EU slashed sugar price subsidies and offered farmers and refineries incentives to get out of the business.
