OTP Bank will buy Banco Popolare Croatiat (BPC), an Italian-owned bank that controls 0.56pc of Croatia’s banking market. Balazs Bekeffy, who heads OTP Bank’s existing Croatian unit, told the paper that OTP Bank had completed due diligence at BPC and would announce the acquisition on Tuesday – Croatian daily Vecernji list said. Now that OTP Bank is no longer in the running for Croatia’s Postabank, it has new targets in the Croatian banking sector, the paper said. Although BPC is small, it would help OTP Bank achieve its goal of 10pc market share in Croatia, it added. There are even smaller banks in Croatia that could be bought out by either OTP Bank or Russian peer Sberbank. OTP Bank acquired Croatia’s Nova Banka in 2005. The bank, renamed OTP Banka Hrvatska, is the eight biggest market player in terms of total assets.
