Spar projects 10-15pc increase in pork sales
Austrian-owned supermarket company Spar Magyarorszag projects a 10-15pc increase in pork sales in its shops this year due to a substantial cut in the VAT on pork and the resulting fall in consumer prices, the company told. Spar, which sells more than 30,000 tonnes of pork a year, is the only retailer operating its own meat processing unit in Hungary. Spar spent HUF 1.7bn in 2015 on expanding its meat processing unit to 10,000sqms from 7,600sqms, adding a slicing unit and a training centre. The unit processed 2,700 cattle and 400,000 pork sides last year. The VAT rate on pork was reduced from 27pc to 5pc at the start of this year.
