Price of bottled wine expected to rise 8-12pc in Hungary

Hungarian vintners are likely to put just 1,8m-2,1m hectolitres of 2010 vintage into their cellars this year, well under the 3,5m hectolitres in an average year, Mr Varga said. Prices have already risen 15-20pc for wine sold in plastic containers, he added. Because of the poor harvest, Hungary will probably import more than 1m hectolitres of wine next year. About 900.000 hectolitres of wine are bottled in an average year in Hungary. This works out to 100m-120m bottles. About 70pc of the rest of the wine is sold in plastic containers. A litre of wine in a plastic bottle can be had for as cheap as HUF 200.
