Hungarian farmers earn more from foie gras
Because of the recession, Hungarian famers hatched just 4,86m goslings in 2009, down from 5,5m in 2008, Mr Foldi said. Goose liver production dropped to 1,769 tonnes in 2009 from about 2.000 in 2008, but revenue from exports – about 90pc of Hungarian goose liver goes to Belgium and France – rose to HUF 6.99bn from 5.76bn. This year, farmers are expected to export 1.830 tonnes of goose liver, generating revenue up to HUF 7,6bn.
