The ministry did not provide a comparison. But a year ago it said farmers harvested 65.2 million tonnes of grain. Bunker weight is normally 7-8 percent higher than the clean weight obtained after the grain is cleaned and dried, but the difference may be lower in hot and dry years, such as this one. The wheat crop by Aug. 31 this year was 29.9 million tonnes, down from 41.2 million a year ago, while barley output was 6.3 million tonnes, down from 14.8 million. The drought also delayed the sowing of winter grains, which have been sown on just 1.0 million hectares by Aug. 31 compared to 3.9 million hectares a year ago.
