Farm gate prices fall 21.7pc in May
In January-May, farm gate prices dropped 25.9pc from the same period a year earlier as crop prices fell 34.9pc and livestock prices decreased 4.0pc. In May, farm-gate prices for cereals fell 38.5pc as part of a trend reversal of a big price increase started in 2007, KSH noted. The pace of the decline in farm-gate prices has slowed every month since January 2009. The price of oil seeds rose 4.8pc. In April 2008, oil seed prices jumped 53.2pc yr/yr. Prices for potatoes rose 13.0pc, while fresh vegetable prices dropped 6.3pc,. Farm gate prices for livestock rose 2.3pc, as hog prices rose 9.4pc, cattle prices climbed 7.9pc and poultry prices slid 7.2pc. Egg prices were up 1.4pc and milk prices were down 25.6pc yr/yr in May. In January-May, cereal prices fell 46.9pc and oil-seed prices dropped 3.0pc. Potato prices were up 2.2pc and fruit prices declined 4.2pc. Livestock prices rose 3.7pc as hog prices climbed 15.5pc and cattle prices increased 10.5pc, but poultry prices dropped 8.4pc. Milk prices fell 26.8pc and egg prices were up 4.7pc.
