European Commission asks Hungary to comply with legislation on protected species

The Commission voiced „concerns” about a 1.4km aerial power line erected in a nature preserve in Central Hungary in the autumn of 2007. The power line is „liable to have a significant negative impact on protected species” in the area, it added. The Felso-kiskunsagi szikes pusztak es Turjanvidek area is home to several globally threatened bird species including the Great Bustard (Otis tarda). The Commission started infringement proceedings on the matter in 2008, and the case was closed in early 2010 when Hungarian authorities agreed to remove the dangerous sections of the power line by April 2010. But the Commission learnt that the necessary work had not been implemented.
