Amendments would exempt some products from tax on unhealthy foods

MP Ferenc Koncz submitted an amendment that would exempt cocoa drinks from the tax. He argued that taxing cocoa drinks would reduce consumption of milk, in the form of chocolate milk, which is a healthy beverage. MP Sandor Font (on our photo) submitted an amendment exempting other sweet products that contain milk, such as sweet curd covered with chocolate and floating islands, arguing that the tax should not hurt dairy farmers. Fidesz MP Antal Rogan submitted an amendment that would extend the tax to extruded salty snacks. The government expects the tax, introduced on September 1, to generate revenue of HUF 20bn-30bn in 2012. In the month of September, the tax brought in HUF 567m, based on tax returns, the tax office said.
