Hungary sends amended food safety decree to European Commission

Hungary started a review of the temporary restrictions imposed on January 19 on all pork from Germany after it was discovered that dioxin-tainted vegetable oil had been sold to German feed mixers. The changes to the Hungarian decree were necessary because of German reports on the matter and measures taken by German authorities, earlier information showed. Mr Kardevan said the European Commission had not formally objected to the measures, but had verbally asked they be changed. EU Health and Consumer Policy John Dalli commissioner found the measure disproportionate. Strict examinations over the past few days have found no dioxin-tainted products, which could establish that German products are safe, Mr Kardevan said. Strict controls of products that may have been tainted with dioxin, including eggs, poultry, pork and feed, will continue in Hungary, he said.
