EU GMO training to help Latin American trade
Participants from regulatory bodies and analysis facilities will attend from across Latin America and the Caribbean region. The aim is to strengthen testing for the presence of GMOs, increase knowledge of EU requirements, and help ensure that exports comply with EU rules. While 129 GM events in crops have been commercialised in the world, only about 20 are authorised for import into the EU, the Commission notes. Brazil has stepped up its approvals of GM crops over the last two years and the 2009/10 season is the first to have a mass supply of GM maize seed. The Commission plans to extend the training programme to Africa and Asia in 2010.
