GVH starts procedure to investigate watermelon cartel

GVH said that the above organisations presumably agreed on the prices they use on watermelons produced in Hungary starting the middle of July and that they do not sell watermelons produced outside Hungary or if so, only at a discriminatory price. On July 6, 2012, producers and supermarket chains agreed that shops would not sell watermelons cheaper than HUF 99 per kilogramm in order to help producers. The step was initiated by Gyorgy Simonka, head of the Hungarian Watermelon Association and an MP of governing Fidesz and regional development ministry state secretary Gyula Budai, earlier.
