Hungary asks for extension of moratorium on farmland purchases by foreigners

The decision to ask for the extension was made at a cabinet meeting and the request, along with reasoning by the farm ministry, was submitted to Brussels on Thursday, said state secretary Zoltan Gogos (on the photo). Professional consultations with EU officials will take place over the summer after which a final request can be submitted by the government, he said. The Commission is expected to decide on the matter by January, Mr Gogos said, answering a question. The moratorium expires on April 30, 2011.
