Some segments of the food sector contracted in 2009: output of tobacco companies, brewers, meat processors and canned goods fell more than 10pc and the dairy industry contracted 4pc. At the same time, butchering, plant oil and milling industries expanded. Foreigners owned 47pc of Hungarian food industry companies at the end of the year, down from 63pc in 2000.
