Hungary hog stock stops shrinking

There were 3.2m hogs, including 226,000 sows, in Hungary in December, Mr Eder said. The number of hogs in the country has fallen since August 2008 and the number of sows has dropped since December 2006, he added. About 4.3m hogs, weighing 480,000 tonnes, were slaughtered in Hungary in 2009, slightly fewer than in 2008. About one-quarter of the hogs slaughtered were imported, and the proportion could rise over 30pc in 2010, Mr Eder said.
