Hungary lamb exports seen falling 20pc in 2010

The price of lamb has fallen to about HUF 760 per kilogramme from HUF 1,000 around the Christmas holiday, Mr Bator said. Almost half of the price drop can be attributed to the stronger forint, he added. More than 90pc of Hungarian lamb is exported to Italy. Domestic consumption is a negligible 0.2 kilogrammes per capita per year. There are about 7,000 shepherding operations in Hungary, most of them family businesses. Just 300-400 are big operations. Shepherds get state support of more than HUF 1,600 per ewe and another HUF 1,200 if their herd is in a disadvantaged region. On top of this, they get about HUF 750,000 under a premium scheme. There are about 960,000 ewes in Hungary.
