Number of grocery stores drops 2pc in Hungary last year

Nielsen said that most of the decline stemmed from the closing of small grocery stores of less than 50 square meters in area, noting that the average area of retail space in grocery stores increased by 4pc in Hungary last year. The market-research company reported that the number of hypermarkets operating in Hungary increased to 165 by December 31, 2010, while the number of discount grocery stores rose to 467 and the number of supermarkets rose to 581 by the end of last year.
